Behind the houses at the top you can see a couple of trees, which indicate a big orchard of pear, peach, plum and cherry trees. There are two houses pictured at the top of the sampler. The red house is a depiction of the old Freeman Farmhouse and the smaller one is the Fenno House both found in the original village. This Learning Sampler is for the beginner through intermediate specialty stitcher. There’s an art to the day; you must handpick your special pumpkins locally, it must be a crisp fall day, and someone should bring some hot apple cider to take the edge off the chill. A child-friendly farm experience is not complete without first traipsing through a corn maze, smelling the fresh scent of hay on a hayride, carving your pumpkins at the farm with others, or visiting a haunted house! This farm has it all. At the top of the Pumpkin Patch Farm Sampler you’ll find a lovely little white house, surrounded by fall foliage. One farmer is just raking up a few of the leaves, and you can see she’s already placed some of her own pumpkins outside. Lower down you will see several children are picking their own pumpkins, while the chickens and cats look on. Below that the farmer is driving his tractor through the corn fields, with a hay wagon full of happy kids. Finally, at the bottom is a Market Stall, where people can pay for their pumpkins, as some are being brought from the fields to store in the barn. Each of the bands are separated by interesting specialty stitched bands. Parts of this design can be stitched separately, and can be used in many different ways. The top and bottom scenes are both wonderful as stand-alone designs. You could also use some of the motifs for a name tag, greeting card, or pumpkin stitching accessories. This latest Farm Sampler honours a bountiful orchard located on the Saanich Peninsula near Victoria. I’ve taken some liberties with the various crops as I know they don’t all ripen at once; for instance the apples are usually ripen later in the season and the raspberries, cherries, and peaches and plums all ripen at different times. All the fruit gives the orchard its bountiful feel. At the top of the Oldfield Orchard Sampler you’ll find the owners blue house beside the ripening apple grove. The farmer is just picking the raspberries ripe on the vines, beside the bee hive and peach tree. The green apples, and purple plums are also ripe and ready to be picked. Their produce and delicious fruit pies are all displayed in the farm market tent stand, and you can rest in a chair sipping some fruit nectar underneath a cherry tree at the bottom of the sampler. The tradition of giving thanks after the summer bounty takes place all over the world, but in North America, it is traced back to the 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, when the Pilgrims invited the local indigenous peoples to a harvest feast after a particularly successful growing season. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany people had starved the previous winter, but meanwhile, kind members of the local Wampanoag tribe taught the Pilgrims to grow corn, beans and squash, how to catch the local fish, and how to collect the seafood. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese were all skills that were needed to survive in their new land. The original three-day feast apparently included goose, lobster, cod and deer, and the vegetables and berries they collected or grew. The Pilgrim Edward Winslow wrote about that now-famous meal, mentioning a wild turkey hunt that took place before the dinner, which may be where the idea of eating turkey came from. TIP: It’s easier to match your threads to the linen, rather than the linen to the threads. So pick your linen first, and then choose threads to see how they look on it. You could Backstitch those lines and use it to sew a backing to the front, or you could ignore those lines and finish your piece just the way you want. You could also use the position of the line to create a lovely border to Cross Stitch around the outside of the design, to make your pocket a bit bigger.
