The technique of embellishing clothing and other fabric with Blackwork was popular in the 14th century, when black thread was stitched in intricate patterns on a white linen background. The stitch used to execute Blackwork is known as the Holbein Stitch or Double Running Stitch which both look the same on the back as on the front.
