“On the First Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me..." Celebrate the song we all know as 12 Days of Christmas! There are actually thirteen distinct motifs in this design which lends itself to being finished as a long bellpull although you can also frame it of course! All motifs plus the Hardanger Heart can be made into various shaped ornaments to decorate a special tree at Christmas. The words are usually sung as a carol. Some scholars have suggested that it is a poem of Christian instruction dating to the 16th century religious wars in England, with hidden references to the basic teachings of the Faith. Many of the symbols of Christianity were not originally religious, including even the present date of Christmas, but were appropriated by Christians from the culture at the time a way to worship and proclaim their beliefs secretly. Now, when you hear what you once thought was a secular song, you will also be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas! Enjoy stitching this favorite carol.. ! :) - Thea
