I first designed this sampler on the occasion of Canada’s 125th Birthday in 1992, but of course you can substitute this number with your own personal lettering.. like the year you stitched it, or your name, or the current birthday year instead! Canada welcomed my family when we emigrated from Holland in 1957 to start a new life in Victoria. I was only eight years old then, but even though I felt overwhelmed by the new language, customs and scenery, I recognized that my parents had brought me to a very special place. As soon as we could, we learned the language and became Canadian citizens, and we’ve been blessed to call Canada our home ever since. Stitched on antique coloured linen, and using some lovely shades of floss, O Canada is an intricately plotted and elegant heritage sampler and is designed with historical and national symbols throughout. It is also an excellent sampler for beginner specialty stitchers to work! I stitched it to show my gratitude for being able to live in this peaceful and beautiful land and now I hope that those stitchers who visit will take it home as a souvenir of their stay, and that those stitchers who live here will enjoy stitching this antique sampler tribute to their own homeland... and to themselves. I know I will treasure it as a symbol of my appreciation and love of our peaceful 'multicultural' heritage. - Thea
